About the Symposium
As the
Faculty of Theology at Sirnak University, we are pleased to host the first "International
Symposium on the Ibn al-Athir al-Jazari Brothers," where the lives,
works, and scholarly perspectives of three great Islamic scholars from Cizre
will be explored in depth.
Majd al-Din
Ibn al-Athir (d. 606/1210), Izz al-Din Ibn al-Athir (d. 630/1233), and Diya
al-Din Ibn al-Athir (d. 637/1239) were not only prominent scholars of Cizre but
also leading figures in the Islamic world. They produced distinguished works in
various fields, including Islamic history, Arabic language and literature,
hadith, tafsir, and fiqh. These three brothers began their scholarly journey in
Cizre and later migrated to Mosul, which then was a major center of knowledge
and culture where they engaged in scholarly and political activities under the
rule of prominent states such as the Zengids, Ayyubids, and Seljuks. Their
intellectual legacy exerted a profound influence both during their era and in
subsequent periods, serving as a fundamental reference for later generations.
The
symposium will provide an in-depth examination of the lives, works, scholarly
contributions, and contemporary influence of these three eminent scholars.
Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the Ibn al-Athir family's
contributions to various disciplines and their intellectual activities across
different regions.
The symposium seeks to establish a comprehensive academic platform for scholars, researchers, and individuals with an interest in the field. In this regard, it will explore the intellectual and cultural reflections of the era in light of the historical legacy of the Ibn al-Athir family.
